NIME 2008 in Genova

The last days I spent in the beautiful city of Genova, attending the 8th intentational conference for new interfaces for musical expression. Fascinating stuff there, lots of selfmade instruments and interfaces, sensors, concerts and performances. But: very little music, in my opinion. Most of the stuff is more a proof of concept and quite academic. Way too little beat and drive if you ask me. I liked these guys with their performance, it was very entertaining to watch them. The video is quite long and gets more dynamic towards the end, so stay in there. The nice thing is that the technology stays invisible but is very audible, which forces you to listen to what your ears are telling you.

There was also another interesting group which was doing a musical performance using biosensors: heartbeats from an ECG, muscle tension or movement and blood pressure were all used to produce wicked sounds. Unfortunately you see nothing on the video I made, and the sound is very unspectactular. Therefore you only get a photo of their setup here.
